“You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.” -Psalm 89:9 (NIV)
Having a restless spirit is not a pleasant thing to be in possession of. When fear and anxiety grip our minds, we feel as if we are in a perpetual storm. A variety of things can trigger the emergence of this in our lives. Circumstances, people, disappointments, all these things can bring a dark cloud over our minds and bind us to despair. Though we yearn for peace and seek to find it, it always seems to elude us. No matter where we turn, our human sources fail to provide the serenity we long for. In our frustration we give up searching; allowing the storms of life to govern us and rob us of our joy under the false notion that peace is not something that we are meant to obtain.
We were not designed to handle worry and sorrow. That is why we are so eager to find relief from the anguish that torments us; looking for that strong foundation on which we can stand upon and find rest. But if our search is leading us to find solace and comfort in the impermanent things of this world, we will only find disappointment when we see that our troubled spirit still remains. Only through Christ, who has overcome the world and the suffering inherent in it, will we find the unshakable peace that we seek. Man was meant to live in a relationship with God under His love and faithful provision. When we have personally accepted Christ’s redemptive sacrifice for our sins and have allowed His Spirit to reside in our hearts, He will fill us with His peace if we choose to take hold of it. The same God who has the power to control the storm is the same God who will put to rest our fears if we simply choose to submit all our cares and worries to Him. We will find true and lasting peace when we cling to Him knowing that He is greater than our sufferings and will restore us according to His perfect will for our lives.
