“The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?” -Psalm 27:1 (NIV)
Life often seems to be in a constant state of flux. Sometimes there are moments when we feel that the sun is shining down on us and everything is going our way. But then come those times when we are in the deepest pits of despair. Scared and afraid we feel overwhelmed by our circumstances and become anxious about the future. In these moments we are shown just how fragile and inconsistent our own strength is. When things are going well, it is easy to boast of our strength and confidence as being unshakable, and that nothing will be able to bring us down. Yet when situations arise that shatter our strength, we feel weak knowing that our strength is dependant on our circumstances for once things start to look hopeful and bright, we again take pride in our fragile strength.
But we want more than this superficial assurance. We want to have that strength which will remain constant regardless of our circumstances. That is why we look up to examples of fearlessness and boldness in the midst of adversity. It is our desire that we too can have this same confidence so that we may no longer be bound by the storms that rage around us. However, no matter how hard we look for such strength in this world, it proves to be a futile endeavour. How can we, whose strength has proven itself to be brittle time and time again, possibly think to find it within ourselves or within others who also share in this same struggle? It can only be found in Christ. When we have allowed Him to enter our hearts, He will strengthen us according to His promises and the work which He carries out in our lives. Allowing ourselves to be guided by Him, we will be able to see His faithfulness in our lives and He will use our trials to build us up in His strength. As He takes us through the challenges and joys of life, we will have a strength that will remain firm and secure in the promise that we have nothing to fear knowing that it is God, the Creator of the Universe, who holds us by the hand and leads us along a victorious path.
