Strength At The Gates

“He will be a spirit of justice to those who sit in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.” –Isaiah 28:6 (NIV)

When a soldier finds himself fighting just outside the city gates against the enemy, he knows that the situation is grave. He has been literally pushed against the wall by the enemy’s advance and the only force which is stopping the city from being overwhelmed by enemy forces is him and his comrades. Should defeat befall the defenders in this critical hour, the consequences would be horrific. Penetrating the walls, the city will fall into enemy hands and the civilian population would have to endure much suffering under their new masters. But should reinforcements come at just the right time and the defenders achieve victory at the city gates, they are emboldened and strengthened to fight on; carrying out attacks on the enemy until he is defeated.

Sometimes we may feel as if we are at the end of our rope. No matter how hard we may fight and struggle, our circumstances seem to constantly get the better of us. Our backs are against the wall and we are one step away from that breaking point when we simply abandon ourselves and allow our circumstances to enslave us in hopelessness and despair. Losing our strength and weary of keeping up the fight, we fall into discouragement and as much as we would like victory, we think that it is destined to slip from our grasp. But there is hope in Christ! When we have allowed His Spirit to dwell within our hearts, He will lift us up in our time of need when we call upon Him. Like a wave of reinforcements coming to bolster the defenders of a city in their hour of need, Christ will give us strength as He works all things together for His perfect will. With the assurance of final victory through Him, we will be able to carry on the fight as He empowers us by His Spirit to stand firm and move forward in Him and His promises.
